Improved the income of 120 low income and female-headed families who live in Jargalant sum, Khovd province by giving them the greenhouse planting and financial management trainings they need to support their families, as well as the greenhouses, hand tools and 8 kind of vegetable seeds they need to have successful businesses. We organized focus groups’ meetings and discussions involved the 120 low income and female-headed families and discussed how to improve their living condition and how to extend their businesses in the future. We collected some quantitative and qualitative data information about 120 families’ livelihood issues.
We organized the following trainings involved 120 low income and female-headed families’ members.
1) How to plant different kind of vegetables trainings for 3 days. In this training, they learned how to make vegetable seedlings, how to transplant them in the field, and how to grow vegetables in the open field.
2) How to protect vegetables from insects’ trainings for 2 days. In this training proper care of crops was discussed, as well as how to use pesticides safely (appropriate levels/amounts) and effectively in order to keep crops safe.
3) How to conserve vegetables trainings for 3 days. In this training we discussed methods for preserving and storing their vegetables safely, recipes for different meals, and how to properly clean their crops.
We gave advice how to account small businesses’ income, expenditures, profits, how to sell their products, vegetables, how to manage their small businesses.
We purchased and distributed 6 Greenhouses (6 m x 20 m) with heating systems and irrigation systems), 3 kinds of Small Hand Tools (tarmuur, maajuur, hurz), 8 kind of Vegetables’ Seeds (potatoes, carrots, cabbages, onion, garlic, cucumber, tomatoes, watermelons) for 6 Groups (120 women). After purchased greenhouses, vegetables’ seeds and hand tools, 120 women started planting vegetables. Productivity has increased, as well as the variety of goods the 6 groups have produced and they are becoming more competitive. They harvested some vegetables and sold 80 % of the vegetables and conserved 20 % of the vegetables. 120 families could improve their families’ incomes and their food usage. It was good chance for them have had a steady income from their businesses. We organized monthly meetings of the 6 groups’ members and during these meetings they have been evaluating the previous month’s work and planning for the following month’s work and activities. This activity was very helpful for 120 women to advice, support and help each other, sharing experiences about small agricultural business management. Monthly groups’ meetings were helping to establish relationships between the groups’ and have created accountability to keep groups’ on task regarding their implementation plans.
We involved 6 groups’ members for the Trade Exhibition in order to create a unique marketing advantage for businesses and gave them the opportunity to meet, connect and communicate with customers. We helped them make their name cards, posters, price information for each product and profiles. Groups’ members prepared wooden shelves for their products. During the trade exhibition time they could publicize their activities for the community people, sold their products and could improve their customers’ numbers.
We could improve income of 6 groups’ members (120 low income and female-headed families) as seen in the increased income for each family after crops harvested and sold. Also we could improve nutrition for the people of Khovd province due to an increase of fruits and vegetables in their diet.
